About Vulcan Knife & Paul Inman

Paul was already a knife maker when he started learning bladesmithing from Bill Moran; Bill is the father of the resurgence of traditional hand forged blades in the U.S. Paul spent several years in Maryland learning the craft of the forged knife. He also spent some time with Rod Chapel and perfected his grinding methods while in the Military at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Paul feels it is important to show his appreciation of both Bill and Rodís kindness, as well as patience. Without the influence of both men, Paul would not be the blade smith he is today and has been for over 40 years. He prefers to work with high-carbon steel. Paul and his wife have spent time in both Alaska and Colorado, finally settling in Tacoma Washington, where they have their store.

...even when they were new they didn't look THAT good!

The owner was wonderful. I could pick knives up later that day or pay a very small fee to expedite my order. I didn't opt for expediting as thought it would fit my schedule nicely. When I returned an hour early the knives were ready.

When they showed them to me I laughed and asked if they were absolutely sure those were my knives because even when they were new they didn't look THAT good!

Honestly, they are beautiful! Because I was a first timer I was given some instructions about how to get used to them as they are no doubt sharper than anything I'd ever handled. I'm very pleased to have learned about this business right here in Tacoma. They are so nice and helpful and friendly not to mention the quality of work is completely amazing; I'm pretty sure you couldn't do better anywhere.

Blown away by the quality and level of service they provide

Went to Vulcan for the first time today to get several knives sharpened before I teach a cooking class this weekend. Blown away by the quality and level of service they provide. The price was lower than expected and the job done was much better than any sharpener I have tried before. My knives are hair-splitting sharp and shining like new.

I really love that you can drop your knives off as late as 1:30 in the afternoon and be able to pick them up after 4:30, with no extra charge for same day/rush service. Service itself was friendly, welcoming and top notch. And as a repeat customer I got an offer to bring in four knives and get one of the four free. Nice bonus.

Fantastic is the only word I can use!

Fantastic is the only word I can use! Shop owners are nice people, the shop is lovely to browse with lots of high quality, hand made, and beautifully restored tools of all types.

I went in for sharpening and repair of some kitchen knives and I'm blown away by how lovely my knives are now! Sharper than they've ever been, and the repaired knife is like brand new. I will definitely be back!

Superb Work!

My knives go through a heavy workload on a daily basis. After having a test knife sharpened here, I brought all my 'daily' knives in. Superb work!

I have since pointed all of my fellow chefs and rabid home cooks here to have their knives cared for. I still have to give my Fujiwara wa-gyuto a pass on the stone at work once a week just to maintain, but I bring my knives in about every 6 weeks or so depending on use. Cool shop!
